Sage African Advice
on Soup Etiquette

(Take It or Leave It)

Margaret Visser, The Rituals of Dinner:
African anthropologist L. C. Ikere's dinner time among Igbo of Nigeria noted that men and women rarely eat together, women serving food to the husband or separate group of men, then eating with the children in front of the hearth: soup is scooped out from the pot into a dish, then three or four children of each mother will go sit with her and eat from a single soup dish.
